To fully support your overall wellness, we do not prescribe benzodiazepines (e.g., Xanax/alprazolam, Ativan/lorazepam, Valium/diazepam) on a long-term/high dose basis or stimulants (e.g., Adderall, Ritalin, methylphenidate, dextroamphetamine, amphetamine) at all.
Although we recognize that these medications are quite beneficial and appropriate in specific cases, our focus is on helping you learn how to work with your emotions and expand your capacity for mindfulness so that you are able to change habits and view the world in a more balanced way. Our aim is to help you alter your relationship with your brain and environment so that you experience lasting changes that lead you to greater levels of wellness.
Often, benzodiazepines can get in the way of this type of work because they dull your senses, thereby making it harder to change your brain pathways. They can also change your sleep patterns, cause tolerance and dependence (i.e., the brain becomes addicted to them to manage anxiety or sleep), impair learning and memory, impair driving and more.
That said, there are cases where benzodiazapines are helpful on a limited basis so long as tolerance/dependence does not develop. We are happy to discuss how to best support you if you are already taking benzodiazapines and ways we might be able to help you reduce your use over time.
With regard to stimulants, again, there are legitimate purposes for them. However, we have also seen people using them primarily for performance enhancement. When used in these ways, the medications often cause people to work harder or for longer periods of time than is good for their health. This in turn can result in people neglecting their own self-care. Given that our goal is to enhance well-being, we have chosen to not prescribe this class of medications.
If you are interested in non-stimulant approaches to ADHD, fatigue, memory/focus problems, we are happy to work with you to help you achieve your goals.
With regard to supplements, essential oils, laboratory or genetic testing, please also note that we have no financial relationships with any of the companies that supply supplements, nutraceuticals, testing or other products that we may recommend.
