Rebecca L. Gladding, M.D. is a board certified psychiatrist, Medical Director and Founder of Mindful Wellness Maui. She graduated from UCSF School of Medicine, completed her psychiatry residency at UCLA and served as Clinical Instructor and Attending Psychiatrist at the UCLA Stewart and Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital and the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior. She is co-author of the mindfulness-based wellness book You Are Not Your Brain. She has been honored with several teaching awards and was featured in the A&E Television Network’s critically acclaimed series Obsessed. She has also appeared on The Today Show, as well as several print and radio outlets.
Dr. Gladding has focused her clinical work on anxiety and how people often misunderstand this vital emotion. As a believer that anxiety is a helpful signal often alerting us that a deeper emotion is trying to reach the surface, Dr. Gladding focuses on teaching people how to recognize anxiety and use it to identify erroneous negative thoughts (i.e., deceptive brain messages) so that they can uncover and express their true emotions. She has been studying how emotional states affect physical health and well-being – and vice versa – for years.
Dr. Gladding studied extensively at UCLA with world-renowned brain researcher and neuroplasticity expert Dr. Jeffrey M Schwartz, where she learned how the mind can change the brain. She is an expert in deceptive brain messages, mindfulness, depression, anxiety and the Four Steps and regularly teaches people how to apply the Four Steps to their lives and relationships.
She continues to learn about emerging areas of research and has been focusing on learning more about how nutrition, epigenetics, the gut microbiome, inflammation and biochemical imbalances (genetic or otherwise) impact mood. She is interested in learning more about Functional Medicine in the coming years.
In addition to her clinical work, she is a certified yoga instructor (200 hour) and has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 2007.
